The Prado can also be known as Land Cruiser LC70, LC90, LC120, and LC150 depending on platform.

In THE UNITED STATES, the Prado is not area of the Land Cruiser range; the Toyota 4Runner replaces the Prado with basic cut as the rebadged Lexus GX occupies the Prado's position in luxury cut. The GX uses basically similar body sections and V8 engine unit. Prados have ladder frames, two-speed transfer boxes and rear beam axles. The J70 program has a forward beam axle as the J90, J120, and J150 programs have front Diesel impartial suspension. Developed as the light-duty vehicle of the 70 Series first, in 1984 November. Available only in a nutshell body with options for soft top or hard top (metal top). Brands like Land Cruiser II, Land Cruiser, and Bundera were designed for these "light responsibility" Land Cruisers. The Bundera was a brief wheelbase--being 2,310 millimetres (90.9 in)--with two-doors, a plastic material top, and barn entry doors at the trunk. There have been three options for the engine unit, the two 2.4 L (2366 cc) 22R petrol engine motor and 2.4 L (2446 cc) 2L and 2L-T diesel and turbocharged diesel motors. Transmitting for the fuel engine unit is the G52 type as the diesels used the R150 and R151 types. They were the same transmission and engines found in 4Runner, in cooperation with Hino.

In 1990 April, a fresh type was presented. Leading grille, front side engine unit and fenders hood were redesigned. The top lamp design changed as well. At exactly the same time the sub name Prado was attached, but names like Land Cruiser and Land Cruiser II were still found in other areas of the world besides Japan. Prado, this means meadow or field in Portuguese, the new range from Land Cruiser was sold toward more on-road purposes, despite a body-on-frame design that was in a position off-road highly.

In Japan it was included with electronic fuel shot and a four rate automated transmission. The two 2.4 L turbocharged diesel engine unit with 71 kW (97 PS; 95 horsepower) and 240 N?m (180 lb?foot) high torque product was installed. The fall into line included 2-door and 4-door types available in SX, LX or Ex girlfriend or boyfriend (4 door only) levels of trim.

The front suspension system was evolved to a "shock absorber through spring and coil" design to boost handling. Using the touch of a button you may switch between periods of absorber. The 22R gas engine was improved to the 22R-E (electronic energy injection) engine unit, the diesel machines were substituted by the two 2.8 L (2776 cc) 3L engine motor, and the two 2.4 L (2446 cc) 2L-T turbocharged diesel engine motor was substituted by the electronically injected 2L-TE turbocharged diesel engine unit. In 1993, the 22R-E fuel engine was changed by the two 2.7 L (2693 cc) 3RZ-FE gas engine unit and the 2L-TE turbocharged diesel engine motor was substituted by the 3.0 L (2982 cc) 1KZ-T turbocharged diesel engine motor with aluminium cylinder mind. The 1KZ-TE could reduce NOx Off Road and soot. The dash table was substituted with a fresh design with minimal changes to suspension system, brakes, and cut details.

n May 1996, the J70 series underwent a makeover and surfaced as the J90 series Prado, an unbiased series. The physical body was lengthened. The look remained medium duty, like the J70. Leading suspension was substituted with an unbiased design, distributed to Tacoma and Hilux Search, created by Hino. The J90 was created by Tahara Seed, available as a three-door brief wheelbase and five-door long wheelbase version.

In Japan, the 3-door series started out with an R in the series which range from RZ, RX, RS to RJ as the 5-door line-up began with T in the series which range from TZ, TX, TS, to TJ. All models was included with front dual wishbone and 4 connected suspension system as well as full-time 4WD. Ab muscles and a Field Screen showing altimeter, thermometer and pressure were standard in every the models. The field monitor had not been available as standard equipment in South Africa. Television audio tracks and display set was optional.

Gasoline motors included the two 2.7 L (2693 cc) 3RZ-FE and, new in Prado models, the 3.4 L (3378 cc) V6 5VZ-FE. Diesel machines were the two 2.8 L (2776 cc) 3L engine motor, the 3.0 L (2986 cc) 5L engine motor and the 3.0 L (2982 cc) 1KZ-TE.
There was an extravagance version of the J90 also, called the Challenger. Top features of the Challenger are standard leather chairs and timber on the dash.

By 1999 June, trivial changes were made. To be able to follow new regulations, fog-lamps were put into the bumper, except in South Africa. In 2000 July, a fresh diesel engine unit, the 3.0 L (2982 cc) Common Rail Diesel Injections (D-4D) 1KD-FTV was created into this model. To lessen theft, an engine motor immobilizer was available.
